Ceramides are lipid molecules that form roughly half of the stratum corneum — the outermost layer of the skin. They are the 'mortar' between skin cells, sealing in moisture and keeping irritants out.
The science
How it actually works
Ceramides combine with cholesterol and fatty acids to form the lamellar lipid layer. With age, environmental aggression and over-cleansing, this layer is depleted. Topical ceramides — particularly Ceramide NP, AP and EOP — restore the lipid ratio and visibly repair compromised barriers.
